Weddings Leave 1 In 8 Couples In Debt

One in eight newlywed couples are believed to be £3,000 in debt as the average cost of a wedding now stands at £18,244.

According to the Daily Mail, the survey, which was conducted by Sheilas' Wheels, found that more couples than ever begin their new journeys together in debt.

As a result, brides and grooms are going to ever-increasing lengths to recoup the costs from their wedding. One in eight of those surveyed (12%) admitted they sell items bought from their gift list to raise money after their big day, while more than half (52%) said they felt wedding costs had spiralled out of control.

More than 1,000 people took part in the study which found 16% of those married within the last five years argued at least once a week during the planning process because of their financial situation, while one in nine (11%) confessed they came close to breaking up due to money worries.

A further 21% of couples had to take out credit cards and loans to pay for their wedding day, with 25% borrowing money from family and friends.

The 25 to 24-year-old age group were the hardest hit when it came to rising costs, with 20% having to choose between a wedding or getting on to the property ladder.

33% admitted getting into debt to pay for their wedding, while 23% decided to postpone their nuptials due to their strained finances. Almost one in five (18%) blamed the pressure of 'keeping up with the Jones' as the main reason for current wedding costs, with a further third putting it down to their ever-expanding guest list.

Other reasons for soaring costs include pressure to host a free bar, while others felt obligated to kit out their bridal party with full regalia even though they could not afford it. 24% of those polled thought they were overcharged by wedding suppliers, with 20% going as far as to admit they booked venues or caterers and later regretted it, due to the cost.

When it came to recouping the costs, 10% of brides said they returned some items from their guests list back to the shop, while 11% sold their wedding dress online to get some money.

A spokesman for Sheilas' Wheels, who conducted the survey, said: "The typical wedding is now a very costly affair which is clearly causing a strain to young couples who are also trying to organise their own big day, get a leg up on the property ladder or even look at starting a family."
