Half Of Sham Marriages Involve Foreign Students

A new report has found that half of all scam weddings in Britain now involve foreign students.

According to the Daily Mail, the news comes after non-EU nationals faced removal from Britain after their bogus colleges were shut down in crackdown moves by the Government. However, instead of returning home, the students are understood to arrange fake marriages with British nationals or EU citizens in efforts to prolong their stay.

Under a decree from Brussels, marrying an EU citizen can grant the same rights to stay as marrying a British citizen.

Looking at the latest figures, officials say the trend now reveals that the migrants' true reason for travelling to the UK in the first place was not to study. Last year, officials identified a suspected 2,000 sham marriages, and a Home Office survey over three months showed that 50% of those involved people who had first entered the UK as students.

The findings were released after latest figures showed that while there has been a large fall in the number of student visas handed out, the number of non-EU nationals going to UK universities has increased by more than 5%. This contradicts Business Secretary Vince Cable's thoughts that universities are missing out because of the Government's immigration policies.
