53% Of Women Work Until Late Stages Of Pregnancy

More than half of UK mums-to-be are said to work until the late stages of their pregnancy before beginning maternity leave.

The research, which was carried out by Experian Interactive, found 53% worked until the final weeks of pregnancy, with a further one in 10 returning to work as soon as they can.

Parents were also discovered to begin saving for their child for more than 12 months before the birth, with a new arrival now said to cost an average of £1,800.

However, a third of couples surveyed admitted they had to delay their plans of starting a family because they were not financially capable. For those really wanting to start a family, 14% said they would divide the costs with a credit card, while 6% said they would take out a loan.

Trying to keep costs to a minimum, 33% of couples said they would only shop during sales, with 13% buying second-hand items from online auctions.

Family members and friends were also able to assist in keeping costs down with 14% of parents-to-be relying on presents from them. A total of 18% said they relied on hand-me-downs.

Peter Turner, Managing Director of Experian Interactive, said: "A new arrival is an exciting time – but it can be an expensive one. The key is to think carefully, and honestly, about how much a baby will cost.

"Start planning sooner rather than later, spread the cost over the course of your entire pregnancy.

"Your little bundle of joy can come with a large price tag, but there are ways to give your child the very best start in life without breaking the bank."
