New Law 'Will Protect Gay Marriage Opponents'

It has been reported that those opposed to same-sex marriages are to get a new protection in law.

According to the Daily Mail, sources for the senior government made the claims.

It is thought Culture Secretary Maria Miller is about to propose amendments to the Public Order Act, which would allow those who believe gay marriage is wrong, to say so in public without the fear of prosecution.

The move is part of an attempt to stop the legislation facing further challenges as it progresses through Parliament.

A source is quoted as saying Ms Miller is to change the Act so it is "clear that people will be protected who want to express their belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman."

It is believed protections within the Act that currently exist for critics of "sexual orientation" will be updated to cover same-sex marriage.

The Government’s amendment is expected to be confirmed by Lords whip Baroness Stowell during the committee stage of the Bill, which begins today.

The controversial issue of same-sex marriage has divided the Government and many see today's move as an attempt to smooth over the rifts the issue has created. It has also suggested it would consider additional measures to address concerns that teachers might have to promote same-sex marriage despite conscientious objections.
