Bride Criticises Guest Over 'Cheap' Wedding Gift

A new bride was so angered over a wedding gift she received, she sent the guest an angry text message demanding to see the receipt for their present.

According to the Toronto Star, Kathy Mason and her boyfriend attended the wedding of a woman called Laura – her second name has not been given.

As a wedding gift, the couple decided to give the bride and her same-sex partner a food hamper, consisting of food items like pasta, olive oil, Marshmallow Fluff and jelly sweets.

However, shortly after the wedding, Ms Mason received a text message which requested to see the receipt for the gift.

She then received a message which read: "I want to thank you for coming to the wedding Friday.

"I'm not sure if it's the first wedding you have been to, but for your next wedding … people give envelopes. I lost out on $200 (£130) covering you and your date's plate… and got fluffy whip and sour patch kids in return. Just a heads-up for the future."

The newspaper says a heated email exchange then took place between the two women, with Mason referring to Laura as having "the etiquette of a twig".

She continued: "I couldn't care less of what you think about the gift you received.

"'Normal' people would welcome anything given. You wanna have a party, you pay for it, don't expect me to."

Later, the bride suggested that Mason should poll "normal-functioning people" about whether she was wrong to give the food basket as a present. So she did and asked readers of The Spectator and the Burlington Mamas Facebook group, where she received more than 200 responses.

She explained: "We just appreciate the support; the confirmation that what we did was thoughtful and not out of place."

Laura, who is Italian, and her Croatian bride have stated they have never attended a wedding where guests did not give money as a gift. She also went on to claim that Mason was one of only two guests who did not give in excess of $150 as a gift.
