According to People magazine, a source claimed the couple decided to split over a disagreement about children.
The insider said: "Stacy called it quits. She wants to have children and a family someday. She knows where George stands on that.
"They talked and they quietly stopped being a couple several weeks ago."
The couple's relationship has been much speculated over in recent months, but the source added that the pair have said they will remain friends.
"They talk every day. They were friends before they started dating and they'll be friends after. It was a friendly [breakup]," they explained.
Clooney, 52, and Keibler, 33, have been dating for around two years. Earlier this year, it was reported that the Hollywood actor was looking for someone more 'low key', rather than his partner who loved the limelight.
"George liked her at first because she wasn't into fame," a source is quoted by In Touch Weekly magazine at the time. "Now that Stacy's been around the A-list, she's hooked. George wants someone more low-key."
