Nigella Lawson 'Had No Idea' About Divorce

Nigella Lawson is said to have had "no idea" her husband, Charles Saatchi, was filing for divorce.

According to The Sun, the celebrity chef only discovered the art collector's decision after hearing the news in a Sunday newspaper.

Last month, the couple's relationship was the subject of intense speculation after Saatchi, 70, was photographed with his hands around his wife's neck as they sat outside a London restaurant.

Following the photographs, Saatchi described the incident as a "playful tiff", but accepted a police caution for assault. Ms Lawson has since moved out of the family home and has been spotted without her wedding ring.

A source close to the chef is quoted by the paper as saying: "Poor Nigella is beside herself. She had no idea that Charles was going to file for divorce.

"She has been trying to call him to talk about what is going on, but she cannot get through.

"She keeps saying, 'How can you file for divorce without even talking about it?'

"This was never Nigella's intention. She was hoping she could quietly reconcile with Charles after she got back from the US. Her intention was for them to spend some time apart and then give things another go.

"Now those plans are in tatters. Nigella is a traditional girl and the idea of divorcing is horrid for her."

At the weekend, multi-millionaire Saatchi issued a statement to the Mail on Sunday announcing he was to divorce his wife of 10 years.

He wrote: "I am sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced. This is heartbreaking for both of us as our love was very deep, but in the last year we have become estranged and drifted apart.

"I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way.

"The row photographed at Scott's restaurant could equally have been Nigella grasping my neck to hold my attention – as indeed she has done in the past, although not in front of Scott's with a photographer snapping away.

"I must stress again my actions were not violent. We are instinctively tactile people. Yes, my hands were around her neck, and they had been touching her arm. Difficult as it may be to believe, for those who have seen the pictures, there was no pressure applied to her. In fact it was merely a gesture – one to which a still photograph gives a wholly different and incorrect implication.

"Nigella has given a statement to the police to support this view. I am sorry that we had a row. I am sorry she was upset. I am even more sorry that this is the end of our marriage.

"I wish Nigella only the best for her future, and for her continuing global success.

"She remains the most wonderful woman in the world. I feel very fortunate to have had such a lovely wife for many years."

Lawson has two teenage children, Cosima and Bruno, from her first marriage to the late journalist John Diamond.
