According to the Daily Mail, 44-year-old Ms Deng has chosen William Zabel to represent her case. Mr Murdoch is said to have turned to top lawyer and friend Pamela Sloan for her assistance. In 1999, Sloan advised Deng on her prenuptial agreement with her now-estranged husband.
In addition, Murdoch, 82, is said to be taking counsel from New York attorney Ira Garr and Gerson Zweifach – the general counsel of his firms, news Corporation and 21st Century Fox.
Murdoch filed for divorce from his wife last month after he filed papers at New York Supreme Court. A spokesman for Murdoch said at the time that the couple's marriage had been "irretrievably broken" for more than six months.
The pair met in 1997 at a company party in Hong Kong, before marrying in 1999, just 17 days after Murdoch's divorce from his second wife Anna Maria Torv was finalised. It was one of the most expensive divorces in history, costing the media mogul more than $1.7m and it is thought he could be trying to avoid a repeat with Deng.
The couple did sign a prenuptial agreement, as well as two post-nuptial agreements, but there is still room for negotiation over such issues like child support and custody for their two daughters, Grace, 11, and nine-year-old Chloe. Another issue which is causing trouble for the pair is the Murdoch family trust. In 2006, Murdoch said the two girls would bot have the same voting rights as his other children; this was something that angered his wife at the time and there were rumours that they almost split over his decision. Since then, Deng is said to have agreed more favourable terms for her children.
A spokesman for Miss Deng confirmed Mr Zabel had been hired but declined to comment further.
