Yesterday (31 July), Us Weekly claimed the 53-year-old was set to become a father, while MailOnline subsequently confirmed the news.
It is understood the music mogul is expecting a child with New York socialite Lauren Silverman.
Ms Silverman, 36, who is said to be "around 10 weeks along" in the pregnancy, is still technically married to Cowell's close friend Andrew Silverman. However, the couple – who have a seven-year-old son together – are no longer believed to be together.
Last night, Cowell was spotted after a day of shooting for The X Factor USA but did not comment on the reports. The news of his impending fatherhood, comes after it was claimed he has been named as a co-respondent in the divorce papers Mr Silverman filed in the Manhattan Supreme Court two weeks ago.
It is understood he has cited adultery as the reason for ending his marriage.
The decision means that Cowell is likely to be called to the witness stand to reveal not only details of the alleged affair with Lauren but also details of his personal finances, estimated to be in the region of $350m, the Daily Mail has said.
There is no evidence, however, to suggest that Cowell and Lauren's affair started before the Silverman's marriage began to fall apart.
On Wednesday, a friend of The X Factor judge is quoted as saying: "Simon is in no doubt the child is his. Simon is [said to be] freaked out by this but there is no question that he will not support the child.
"In the harem hierarchy, Lauren is regarded as the fun, party girl. The other girls have all met her, they know who she is and they have been reduced to tears by this."
Cowell's 'harem', includes his close female friends and ex-girlfriends such as Sinitta and Mezhgan Hussainy, who are said to be in shock at the news, while Mr Silverman's brother, Alexander, has slammed Cowell for his "betrayal".
"It is an unbelievable story of betrayal. It is a sad story and a tragic story," he told the New York Post.
