Most Popular Baby Names Revealed

New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed the most popular baby names in England and Wales for 2012.

For the second year in a row, Harry and Amelia top the boys and girls' lists, respectively.

For 2012, more than 28,000 different boys' names and more than 36,000 different girls' names were registered.

There were seven new entries into the top 100 boys' names for England and Wales. They are Hugo, Sonny, Seth, Elliott, Theodore, Rory and Ellis. As a result, Joel, Hayden, John, Ashton, Jackson, Ben and Reece fell out of the top 100. For the girls, there were six new names in the top 100 - Mollie, Ivy, Darcey, Tilly, Sara and Violet. They took the places of Lexie, Lauren, Rebecca, Tia, Nicole and Kayla.

In Wales, Jacob and Amelia replaced Oliver and Lily as the most popular baby names.

In 2012, there were 729,674 live births in England and Wales, with the top 10 names accounting for 13% of those that year.

Amelia was the most popular name in all regions of England, while Harry topped the list in seven out of nine regions. It was beaten by Muhammad and Jack in London and the North East respectively.

The highest climber among boy's names was Bobby which jumped 19 places, to number 57. For girls, Elsie was the largest climber, rising 17 places to 70.

Aiden and Isobel were the biggest fallers, dropping 19 and 18 places respectively year-on-year.
