Paralympian Stands For Surprise Wedding Dance

A 25-year-old British paralympian surprised guests at his wedding recently, when he stepped out of his wheelchair for the first dance with his new bride.

Nathan Stephens lost both his legs in an accident when he was nine, but has competed in three Paralympics since then.

He had not been able to use prosthetic legs due to the discomfort caused, but insisted on standing to dance with his wife at their wedding, according to The Times.

Mr Stephens and his bride, Charlene Beard, had rehearsed in secret for eight months before the wedding.

The guests, who had never seen him standing, were surprised to see him stand and dance a three-minute routine to I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz.

Mr Stephens, from Bridgend, South Wales, lost his legs after he fell under a freight train, but still managed to make a career as a successful paralympian, breaking British senior records in javelin, discus and shot put aged 16.

He represented Great Britain in the 2006 Winter Paralympics and 2008 Summer Paralympics, before breaking the world record for javelin.

The athlete was disqualified during the discus at the London Olympics because officials objected to his technique, but he still took the opportunity to propose to his wife during the games.

The couple were married at the Celtic Manor Golf Resort in Newport, South Wales, last Saturday.
