Average Age Of Babysitters Increase

A new study has revealed that the average age of babysitters has increased by 20 years over the course of a generation.

The research, which was carried out by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, found that the increase in age is because parents are now more wary of whom they trust with their children.

A total of 1,798 parents, with at least one child aged 10 or under, took part in the survey to discover the main reasons for the age difference.

Of those who participated, 71% said they had a babysitter for their children, with 51% said they asked grandparents to babysit. 32% admitted to asking an aunt or uncle to look after the children, while 26% said a friend would babysit for them.

The average age of the babysitter was found to be 34.

Respondents also answered questions on whether they had a babysitter when they were younger, with 79% saying they did. The results showed that a younger family member was the most popular choice for a babysitter (55%), followed by a 'casual' babysitter (37%).

Only 21% said their grandparents' minded them when they were younger, with the same choosing an older family member. Just 15% said a friend of their parents was their babysitter.

When asked what they thought the average age of their babysitter(s) was when they were younger, 14 emerged as the average age, suggesting a 20-year increase over the course of a generation.

When asked why they felt there was such a large age-difference, 56% felt parents are "less trusting of people with their children now", while 21% admitted the younger generation is "less responsible. A further 16% said the age difference was down to more children "having their grandparents around".

Commenting on the findings, Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: "Is the average age of a babysitter a reflection of modern society? Sadly, we think it might be. Several years ago, people thought nothing of leaving younger children in the care of their older siblings and local children could earn some pocket money by keeping an eye on a neighbour's youngster whilst the parents went out for the evening.

"But it seems that those days are gone, as people no longer trust others in the manner that they used to. It could be considered a good thing that parents are more rigorous in choosing who looks after their children, but it's also sad that parents feel the need to do so in today's society."
