However, insiders claim neither party has filed for divorce or made a move towards a legal separation. Instead, the couple are said to want to work through their problems for the sake of their two children.
An insider said: "They want the best for their kids, no matter what happens."
The couple have not been seen together since April, when they appeared at an Awards Gala, and have been spotted on separate holidays and at various red carpet events alone.
In February, the couple denied rumours that they were going through a "hush hush trial separation".
It was claimed at the time that their marriage had "buckled under the pressure of dealing with Michael's cancer battle, his son Cameron's prison term on drugs charges and Catherine's struggle with bipolar II disorder."
Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, started dating in 1999 and married in November 2000.
They have two children together – 13-year-old Dylan and 10-year-old Carys.
