Women's Beauty Is Most Important For Men

It has often been claimed that men value beauty in a woman, while women prefer men with a high social status, and while attempts have been made to derail these views, a new study says otherwise.

The research, which is published in this month's Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, is the first to demonstrate experimentally that men and women are different in the way they choose a partner.

The findings contradict recent speed-dating studies that claimed preferences in men and women do not support how they actually evaluate and choose speed-dating partners.

Norman Li, associate professor of psychology at Singapore Management University and Oliver Sng, a doctoral psychology student at Arizona State University, conducted a number of experiments using online chatting and speed-dating methods. Unlike previous studies, the experiences included men and women with low social status and low physical attractiveness.

Following a period of chatting with the opposite sex – with both low and moderate levels of the above traits – men, more so than women, reported less attraction towards potential mates with a low physical attractiveness. Women, on the other hand, indicted a similar aversion towards those males with a low social status.

According to Professor Li, the study's lead author, the research is important because it is clarifying how exactly men and women differ.

Professor Li explained: "That is, they prioritise different qualities when screening each other in online chats and speed-dates – women want men who are at least average in social status while men want women who are at least moderately physically attractive.

"We also are the first to demonstrate that what individuals say they value in potential mates is indeed reflected in how they actually choose them in initial mating situations."

The findings are also consistent with previous mate preference research conducted by Li which found that men prioritise having moderate physical attractiveness, while women prioritise having moderate social status in a long-term mate.
