Women Going Under The Knife To Lose 'Mummy Tummy'

It has been claimed that the number of women turning to surgery to get back into shape as quickly as possible following the birth of their child is increasing.

The revelation was made during a plastic surgeon's conference this week.

It was also suggested that the ever-growing number of new mother's are turning to surgeons in order to achieve their pre-pregnancy body before they return to work.

Among the most common procedures, is the 'two-in-one' tummy tuck and breast lift surgery, which is said to be inspired by celebrities who seem to gain their shape shortly after giving birth.

Judy Evans, a consultant plastic surgeon at the Circle Hospital in Bath, is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying the two-in-one package is becoming "incredibly popular" with women who are about to return to work after maternity leave.

Speaking at the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons', she added that while the mothers have time to have the surgery, they don't have enough to have it on two separate occasions. A warning was issued to those would-be patients however, that their bodies will not return to normal instantly and that major surgery requires several weeks of recovery.

Raj Ragoowansi, a Harley Street cosmetic surgeon, added that the number of middle-class women coming to him for "yummy mummy tummy tucks" had doubled in the last five years.

At the same conference, he continued: "Middle-class mums are realising it is a great way of rejuvenating and re-invigorating yourself.

"After pregnancy, women want to tighten up those bits that tend to go a bit saggy. That is perfectly natural."

Surgeons say women should wait at least nine months after childbirth before deciding on cosmetic procedures, as hormonal fluctuations can lead to women making decisions they would later regret, while breast surgery can make it difficult to breast feed.
