The music mogul's comments come after he was heavily criticised for being caught smoking next to his pregnant girlfriend.
Speaking on The Arsenio Hall Show, the 54-year-old was forced to discuss the habit when he was questioned about it. The host, who said he could smell the smoke, challenged Cowell on the subject, to which he responded with a joke that he was supporting the US economy by only smoking American cigarettes.
When Hall then said: "You have to stop smoking around the kid, man!", Cowell turned serious and said he would try to stop smoking for good.
The X Factor USA judge is currently expecting his first child with US Socialite Lauren Silverman. The pair's relationship first came to light during the summer.
