Wedding Planner Stole £10,000 From Couples

A court in England has heard how a wedding planner stole more than £10,000 from married couples-to-be, after she secretly deposited cheques into her own bank account.

According to The Telegraph, Patricia "Lee" Glancy, who was formally employed at the Wentworth Golf Club, told clients who would be celebrating their big day at the club that she would fill in blank cheques with the club's details. However, she was alleged to put her down details on the cheques instead.

Ms Glancy has argued she acted to help support a dying friend, and while she admitted that some money was spent on furnishings, she had given most of the money away to cancer charities. However, Judge Peter Moss said there was "not a shred of evidence" to support her claims that she had donated to charity.

He is said to told the defence: "Your client has committed a grave fraud, a sustained fraud. She has the propensity to be dishonest.

"I'm told she has given it to charity. There's not a shred of evidence to support it."

And when the judge was told that Glancy had not put the money aside because she had been focused on funding her legal representation, he replied: "I'm going to be blunt – I just don't believe her. I think I'm being sold a dummy."

The Guildford Crown Court also heard how Glancy was involved in five incidents. Four involved couples who had paid by a cheque, while the third involved a bank transfer.

The amounts ranged from £1,000 to just over £2,600, with the total amount Glancy defrauded the bride and grooms-to-be of almost £10,800.

It is understood the incidents occurred between 1 March and 6 June this year.

The issue only came to light when one of the clients, Lisa Patel, sent an email, only to receive a message saying Glancy had left the club.

Wentworth Golf Club subsequently started an investigation into the activities of Glancy, who had already resigned. They could not find the related files as she had taken them with her.

Then, on 7 August, Glancy went to police in Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey, and confessed to her crimes. She was charged with five counts of committing fraud by false representation, which she admitted.

The judge deferred sentence to 30 January, by which time he demanded proof from the accused as to what had happened to the money and also that she had begun to put cash aside to refund the club.
