Quarter Of Fathers Use Technology To Occupy Their Kids

The more traditional methods of entertaining children are being replaced as an increasing number of parents turn to tablets and computers.

A new survey, which was based on 1,000 adults and carried out on behalf of Justin's World apps, created by children's entertainer Justin Fletcher (and also known as CBeebies' Mr Tumble), revealed that most parents believe it is important for their children to "start with technology from a young age".

Looking at the figures, more than a quarter (27%) of fathers are "iPad dads", relying on tablets to keep their children occupied most of the time they are with them, compared to 12% of mothers. While overall, 57% of fathers regularly use technology to 'babysit' two to six-year-olds, while 59% of mothers were the same.

Just 16% of fathers and 29% of mothers said they never allow their young children to play on a tablet computer, while one in 16 dads and one in 25 mums felt they would have a negative effect on their child's development.

Allan Johnston, creator of Mr Tumble and one of the team behind Justin's World, commented: "As a dad myself, I can see why the tablet is so popular.

"Fun and learning is just a tap or a swipe away. You can read a story, watch a video or do a quick phonics activity – it's all there. They are portable as well.

"The only thing I would say is, like anything in life, it's all about offering your child a balanced diet. So although tablets definitely have a positive role to play in modern family life, there should also be times when you revert to more traditional forms of social interaction."
