Some 28% of Britain's mothers have admitted they have been drunk in front of their children, a new survey has revealed.
The study, which was commissioned by ITV's This Morning, found that a quarter of the 1,000 mothers surveyed have been drunk within the last month, while one in six have admitted to previously being too hungover to look after their children.
A quarter said that while they are meant to be looking after their kids, they have been so intoxicated, that they have even put their own safety at risk.
When it comes to drinking, 33% confessed that while they drink socially with friends, they also drink when they are alone; while a further 36% said they do so to relieve work-related stress. A third of women admitted they drink to help them deal with the stress of looking after their offspring.
The study also raised further concerns when it was revealed that British mothers are now drinking heavily, with 40% drinking two to three times a week and 15% saying they drink in front of their children several times a week. A quarter admitted to regularly drinking more than two alcoholic drinks in one night.
Commenting on the findings, This Morning's editor, Adam Vandermark, said: "While most are aware of the perils of binge drinking, it's shocking to see statistics like this that show that many mothers are drinking so much that they feel guilty, while some have even admitted to putting their lives at risk.
"This lifestyle appears to be a weekly or even daily occurrence and not just during the festive season. It's important to discuss issues like this and highlight the long term dangers."
