Women Choose Babies Before Marriage

A new study has revealed that more women feel it is acceptable to start a family before they get married.

Some three quarter of the women surveyed held this view, while nine in 10 adults are happy to buy a house with their partner before they tie the knot.

The YouGov survey, which was commissioned by wedding store chain David's Bridal, revealed that of the 2,000 participants, 76% of women said they thought it was fine to start having children without having a wedding first.

In general, the younger generations polled were found to have more liberal opinions when it came to children and relationships, with 80% of 18 to 34 year olds admitting they would consider embarking on parenthood before walking down the aisle. This is in contrast to the over 55 age group, with 35% saying they would not approve of having a family first.

When it comes to location, adults in Northern Ireland were found to be the most 'open-minded' region, with 77% believing that having children before marriage is "very acceptable". Those from the South West were discovered to be more traditional, with only 38% holding this opinion. When asked about purchasing a house together before having a wedding, 67% of women said this was "very acceptable". Again, Northern Ireland topped the poll, with 76% agreeing that it was "very acceptable".
