Paul Mason was appearing on an episode of US show 'The View', alongside American resident Rebecca Mountain – who he had met online – when he accepted the proposal.
Speaking to the hosts, the 53-year-old added that he would lose enough weight so he could walk down the aisle as he didn't "want to go down that aisle in a wheelchair."
Mr Mason, who is from Suffolk, is understood to have flown to the United States in December to spend Christmas with his partner and to visit a consultation about surgery to remove access skin. At his heaviest, Mason weighed 70 stone (440kg), but with the help of gastric band surgery, managed to get his weight down to 22 stone (140kg). However, the drastic weight loss left him with large amounts of excess skin.
When asked about wedding plans, Ms Mountain said they had not yet set a date as "there's so many things we need to do to take care of Paul first."
The couple started a relationship after Ms Mountain contacted Mason to help him through his struggles.
In a previous interview, he said that their relationship began after a "frustrating experience" with the NHS. At the time, he said: "I guess it has been a blessing in disguise. The trauma I've had with the addiction side of things, if that hadn't of happened, Rebecca wouldn't have got in touch.
"She initially got in touch to help me. It didn't come into our heads that we'd fall in love with each other."
