Claims that the pair were in a secret relationship first emerged last year – shortly after it was revealed Marsh and her husband, Jamie Lomas, had called time on their marriage.
Speaking to The Mirror, the actor revealed he and 37-year-old Marsh had grown close during filming on the soap. He added that the pair were "in love" and were planning their future.
"We loved each other and weren't afraid to say it," he confessed. "It wasn't something we intended to happen, but we couldn't stop our feelings.
"We planned a future together. We dreamed about me moving up north and living together. We spoke of how wonderful life would be."
When asked what caused the couple to then go their separate ways, Mellor said it was because his lover was feeling guilty at hurting her family as well as her marriage to Mr Lomas.
He continued: "The last thing Kym wanted to do was hurt anyone, and she knew what we were doing could have serious consequences for everyone.
"But the fact we were both willing to take those risks when the stakes were so high shows how much it meant."
Mellor was in a five-year-relationship with PR executive Charlotte Bury at the time of the alleged affair and despite how things have turned out, the actor said he does not regret his actions.
"I don't regret my relationship with Kym but now I am in a real relationship, and I'm truly happy for the first time I can see that it was doomed from the start and it took a lot out of both of us."
Mellor is now dating glamour model Rhian Sugden, while Marsh has separated from Jamie Lomas. Their divorce was finalised earlier this month.
