Sham Marriage Trial Rescheduled

A trial of a vicar, accused of officiating at hundreds of sham marriages, has been rescheduled, the Croydon Advertiser has reported.

It is understood this is the third time the trial will have been rescheduled.

According to the newspaper, the Reverend Nathan Ntege is charged with 14 immigration offences which relate to 492 marriages over a 15-month period, from December 2009 to March 2011.

A verger of the church, 80-year-old Brian Miller, is also charged with the same offences, while Maudlyn Riviere, secretary of the Church of St Jude's and St Aidan in Thornton Heath – where the ceremonies were carried out – has also been charged with carrying out an act to facilitate a breach of UK immigration law. Another woman, understood to be 50 years of age, is alleged to have acted as a "fixer" for a number of the ceremonies, as well as allegedly being married in one of the weddings herself. She has been charged with conspiracy, plus five counts of assisting illegal entry.

A fourth person has also been charged with facilitating a breach of immigration law.
