Parents Shorten Children's Bedtime Stories

A new survey has revealed that many parents are 'shortening' their children's bedtime stories, because they are too busy to tell them the full version.

One in nine parents admitted to shortening classic bedtime tales, while one in eight choose to throw in a touch of reality by adding elements from their own lives.

The study of more than 1,100 members of website Netmums, by the makers of Aquafresh Kids, found that a small number of parents even pursued a 'celebrity culture' as they added a famous face to their story in the hopes of making it more exciting for their children.

Pop stars were found to be the most common celebrity addition, followed by members of the Royal Family and actors.

Despite time constraints placed on parents, many do appear to try and set regular time aside to read their child a story before going to bed. Some 70% of those polled said they observed story time at least five times a week – this compares to 37% a generation ago. Mums were also found to be the main storyteller, but fathers also played their part 26% of the time. This was followed by the grandparents (5%).

One in 10 parents confessed they wanted more time to spend reading, as a third of youngsters were found to be told a story lasting less than seven minutes. One in 12 chose to read to their child at bath time, while others had to squeeze in a story while brushing their kid's hair or brushing their teeth.

Netmums founder Siobhan Freegard said: "Like it or not we live in a celebrity culture, so weaving in famous people keeps bedtime tales up to date.

"The fairytale Royal romance has been increasing numbers of parents add William and Kate to their bedtime tales, while others prefer to add in their child's favourite celebrity.

"Parents seem to be busier than ever before but still want to have this special time with their little ones before they drift off."
