The singer, 20, was speaking to US radio DJ Showbiz Shell when she revealed the news.
She admitted that the split had happened a "while ago", but the pair remained good friends.
She said: "We broke up a little while ago, but he's a really good friend.
"He's so talented. I am so glad to have met him and have a friend like him in my life. He's an amazing person. It was very civil. It was mutual.
"He's such a great person. I adore him and he's so talented."
Grande and Sykes were first reported to be in a relationship last year. In September 2013, they confirmed they were dating, but rumours that they had called time on their relationship first started to emerge in December.
