Man Jailed For Stealing Wedding Rings

A man has been jailed for a year in Scotland after he was found guilty of stealing his customers' wedding and engagement rings before pawning or melting them down.

According to Herald Scotland, 45-year-old David McLaughlin, a jeweller, took customers' jewellery and then created a number of excuses as to why the items had not yet been returned. Among the reasons given for the missing valuables, were that they were in a safe, or that they still needed polished.

It is understood more than 80 people were conned by Mr Laughlin, with the total value of the jewellery thought to have exceeded £70,000. Many items have still not been recovered.

McLaughlin admitted to fraud and theft at his business in Irvine between November 2009 and December 2010.

Speaking at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, Sheriff Murphy is quoted by the publication as telling the accused: "This was a fraudulent scheme on a grand scale carried out on unsuspecting members of the public."

Defending McLaughlin, James Irvine said the 45-year-old was "ashamed" of his actions.
