The news, which has come as a surprise for many, was inadvertently revealed by actress Melissa McCarthy at an awards ceremony.
According to the Daily Mail, McCarthy was presenting an award to Sarandon at the AARP's Annual Movies for Grownups Awards Gala in Beverly Hills when she introduced the actress by saying: "Susan is so cool – I mean she dated David Bowie."
Reports suggest the audience was left shocked by the revelation, as were Sarandon's two sons who were also present, but it is claimed McCarthy did not know the relationship was a secret.
Sarandon and Bowie both starred in vampire film, The Hunger, in 1983 and are thought to have had a brief relationship at the time. Five years later, the 67-year-old actress married Tim Robbins. The couple were together for 21 years and had two children together. Bowie married supermodel Iman in 1992. The couple are still together.
