The British actress gave birth to a baby boy – named Bear Blaze – with her husband Ned Rocknroll in December 2013.
In an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the 38-year-old admitted that her other two children helped to name their sibling.
She explained: "It was really lovely, actually, they were very much included, and we settled on Bear quite early on.
"A friend of mine when I was younger was nicknamed Bear and I just had always really loved it.
"And he was a very much a bear. He was everyone's shoulder to cry on, he was a big bear hug, he was a great figure in my life."
Winslet then went on to explain her son's middle name, Blaze, saying she chose the moniker because she and husband Ned met on Sir Richard Branson's private island before a fire destroyed the tycoon's luxury estate.
She said: "Bear's second name is Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire basically.
"Well, we did. The house burned down and we survived. But we wanted something of the fire, and so Blaze was the name that we came up with."
Winslet married Rocknroll, the nephew of Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson, in New York in December 2012, after almost 18 months of dating. While Bear Blaze is the couple's first child together, the actress is also a mother to Mia, 13, and 10-year-old Joe from previous relationships.
