Brits Don't Splash Out On Mother's Day Gifts

A new survey has revealed that people now spend an average of just £12 on gifts for their mum on Mother's Day.

The poll, carried out by Cussons Mum & Me, found that the cost attributed to gifts also varies from region to region. For example, mothers in Liverpool can expect more than £50 to be spent on their card and present, while those in Belfast will only have spent £8 on gifts.

The survey also found that mum's feel their children spend 30% less on them on Mother's Day compared to Father's Day. However, of the mums that were surveyed, many admitted that they did not want material gifts from their children. Some 29% said the best gift is a thoughtful card, 15% said a bunch of flowers, while 12% said eating lunch out was a nice Mother's Day present.

Almost half (47%) also said they just wanted to spend time with their children on Mothering Sunday, with 30% wanting to have a lie-in, or to be pampered. Some 26% wanted breakfast in bed, while a further 18% said they would like to take a long bath – with no interruptions.

Interestingly, however, 49% of women admitted they also expect their partner to indulge them as well on the holiday.

A spokesperson for Cussons Mum & Me said: "It's interesting to see what presents mums would like for Mother's Day and what people spend, but all mums really want is a bit of time to relax and be spoiled and this needn't cost the earth.

"Breakfast in bed or a lie-in can be just as cherished by busy mums as any bouquet of flowers."
