The actor was said to have proposed to his girlfriend late last year, but neither party had commented on the speculation until now.
The news was finally confirmed by Depp in Beijing where he is promoting his newest film, Transcendence.
According to reports, Depp, 50, was spotted wearing a ring on his finger and when asked if he had popped the question to Ms Heard, answered: "The fact that I'm wearing a chick's ring on my finger is probably a dead giveaway. Not very subtle."
He later added: "I think that I would be better at making women's shoes than I would be at wedding planning, I can't plan anything. I'm really bad at that stuff."
Depp and Heard first met in 2011 on the set of movie The Rum Diary. In June 2012, they started a relationship, shortly after Depp confirmed he had separated from his partner of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis. Depp and Paradis have two children together.
