The musician was making his first major public appearance at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Thursday, when he was said to be in an "upbeat" mood.
He was presenting Genesis star Peter Gabriel onstage when he was seen without his wedding ring.
Last month, Martin and Paltrow released a joint statement confirming their 10-year marriage had come to an end.
According to In Touch magazine, an eyewitness is quoted as saying: "Chris introduced Peter Gabriel at the 29th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – he seemed upbeat and happy and read a fake passage from the 'Genesis' portion of the Bible.
"It was actually quite funny. The crowd loved Chris. They laughed at his jokes and he smiled a bunch."
They added: "Chris looked awesome—tan, equally confident and approachable. He didn't seem to be in the midst of such a scandal."
At the end of March, Martin and Paltrow said they had decided to "consciously uncouple". They have two children together, Apple, nine, and eight-year-old Moses.
