According to media reports in the US, the Hollywood actor popped the question "not that long ago".
Clooney, 52, and 36-year-old Alamuddin have been spotted in New York and on trips to Tanzania and the Seychelles Islands in recent months. While just last week, Ms Alamuddin was said to have been wearing a "massive" ring, while dining with her partner and Cindy Crawford.
A source is quoted by People magazine as saying: "George and Amal are trying to keep things very low key but they also aren't really trying to hide this, it doesn't seem.
"I think it's like they want the people they love to know that this is real, that they plan on being together forever."
Clooney's agent, Stan Rosenfield, declined to comment on the speculation, while Ms Alamuddin has also refused to comment.
