That's according to a group of football fans polled by TLF, on behalf of Warren United, a new animated sitcom about a diehard fan of a rubbish football team.
Some 63% of participants – who are season ticket holders – said they believed the pain of relegation was the closest men would come to experiencing the pain of childbirth. Even for those who visit just one game a season, they also agreed that relegation of their favourite team is the equivalent to being in labour.
Pete May, author of the book and blog, 'Hammers in the Heart: A Lifetime of Supporting West Ham', has seen many West Ham relegations and admits only a true fan can understand the pain of relegation.
He said: "I remember once when we were relegated seeing this huge skinhead in tears. He was holding his head in his hands and sobbing."
While May has never given birth himself, he has attended the birth of both his daughters.
"I've seen childbirth twice and relegation five times," he continued. "Childbirth does look look very painful, but it only lasts a few hours. The pain of relegation lasts all summer. And beyond."
