Most Popular Baby Names Revealed

A new study has revealed the most popular baby names for boys and girls in 2013.

According to the Social Security Administration, Noah is now the most popular name for boys and ending a 14-year reign for Jacob. For the girls, Sophia took the top spot for the third consecutive year. Elsewhere, William, Michael and Daniel also proved popular, as did Olivia, Abigail and Madison for the girls.

Looking at the most popular names, Jacob first claimed the top spot in 1999, but in the previous 45 years before that, Michael was the most popular for all but one. For the girls, there was more variety and while Mary was the most popular in the early half of the 20th century, Emily, Emma and Jessica have also ranked first.

Commenting on the findings, Laura Wattenberg, creator of Babynamewizard.com, said: "You compare Jacob with all its hard, punchy consonants, versus Noah and Liam, you can really see where style is heading.

"In the past, most parents were picking from a pretty well-defined set of names," she continued. "Literally for hundreds of years, the English royal names dominated. You had John and Mary and James and Elizabeth. Today, we get names everywhere."

Pamela Satran, founder of Nameberry.com, also told the MailOnline: "We see the rise of Noah and Liam and the endurance of Sophia and Emma as a sign of great gender equality when it comes to parents' choice of baby names.

"Boys' names are becoming more ruled by pop culture and fashion, traditionally the domain of girls' names. Girls' names are becoming more rooted in tradition and inspired by strong historic namesakes."

In addition to the most popular names, the Social Security Administration also records the fastest-rising names each year. For boys, the fastest rising name in 2013 was Jayceon, which jumped 845 spots, to number 206 on the list. A famous hip-hop artist, known by his stage name 'The Game', is called Jayceon Terrell Taylor, and for the girls, the winner was Daleyza which jumped a total of 3,130 spots to 585.

According to reports, 'Daleyza' is the name of the young daughter of Larry Hernandez, a singer who stars in a Spanish-language reality TV show called Larrymania. The findings suggest that reality television is one of the largest influences when it comes to picking baby names.
