Cost Of Hen Parties Continues To Rise

The average hen do now costs guests hundreds of pounds, a new survey has revealed.

The staggering prices come as hen nights now involve a mini 'staycation' or a full-blown holiday for the bride-to-be and her closest pals.

The study, commissioned by Debenhams, found that the average cost of attending a hen party abroad now stands at almost £700, while a staycation will put women out of pocket by around £200. As a result, the cost of a guest attending the bride's big day itself actually proves to be a lot cheaper.

For example, those who responded to the survey claimed a number of factors were to blame for the increasing cost of a hen do. These included needing to buy new clothes – even if it is just to keep up with appearances. A visit to the hairdressers and some beauty sessions also made the list, as did transport and the inevitable food and drink demands. Altogether, this soon racks up to an average of £185 – if the group are staying in the UK. However, with an ever-growing trend of taking bachelorette parties abroad, costs reach an average of £680 by the time a new wardrobe of clothes, flights and hotels are included.

In contrast to this, the average cost of a guest attending a wedding was found to be just £360, and this includes transport, accommodation, a new outfit, wedding gift and drinks.

Some 1,100 people took part in the survey, which found that 43% of potential brides gave friends at least three months warning of a hen party so they could plan ahead, while 24% provided more than six months notice of the celebrations. Two-thirds of women who had been invited to a pre-wedding party said they would start saving 'well in advance' so that they could afford the occasion, while others look for suitable outfits in a sale. 78% of women said they would buy something new to wear.

Commenting on the findings, a personal stylist at Debenhams is quoted as saying: "We have seen a steady increase in enquiries from customers wanting help purchasing new outfits for hen parties, weekends and trips abroad.

"Often the group of invited women may not all have seen each other for a few years and it is natural that they want to look their best. Planning and shopping ahead is the key to getting the most for your money."

The average cost of attending a hen party in the UK:

Travel/fuel/train/bus/taxi/limo (£20)

Cost of organised activity or spa day (£40)

Food and drink (£50)

New outfit for the evening (£75)

Total: £185

The average cost of attending a hen party abroad:

Flights/train tickets (£150)

Three nights' accommodation (£210)

Toiletries/hair and beauty (£40)

Food and drink (£150)

Clothes/accessories (£100)

Taxis to and from hotel (£30)

Total: £680
