Women Still Want A Traditional Proposal

A new study has found that a majority of brides still wish for a traditional wedding proposal.

Of the 2,000 women polled by Beaverbrooks, younger women – aged between 18 and 24 – were found to be more traditional in their views when it comes to a proposal, compared to the older generations.

For example, when it comes to popping the question, seven in 19 of 18-24 year olds said they wanted their partner to get down on one knee, but support for this formality falls as women get older. Elsewhere, the younger generation are also more keen for their husband-to-be to discuss the subject of marriage with their father, with 36% wanting their father's permission.

74% of women also said it is up to the man to propose, and if he doesn't, neither will they.

Men are also advised to keep it simple when it comes to the proposal with little enthusiasm for flash-mob proposals in public, popping the question in rhyme, or presenting their fiancée with pearls, amethyst or coloured gemstones. A diamond is still the most popular choice when it comes to the ring with 72% of women choosing this option, while 10% of women said they would like a ring like Kate Middleton's sapphire diamond and just 5% said they wanted a ring like Beyoncé's 18-carat rectangular sparkler.

When a woman says yes, the first person they want to tell is their mother with 56% saying they would phone her first, compared to just 5.4% who said their dad would be the first they would call.

16% said they would actually call their best friend first, while one in 500 said they'd ring their ex.

Anna Blackburn, for Beaverbrooks, said: "The research shows that that many women still yearn for old fashioned romance and their ideal engagement ring is a massive part of that experience.

"Diamond engagement rings signify commitment and love so it's no wonder that the tradition still holds so much importance.

"Traditionally the man would pick a ring as a surprise but we often find a couple will do this together. Some women even take a picture of their ideal diamond ring to share with their partner as a helpful hint."
