A federal appeals court in the US has blocked a ruling on banning gay marriage in the state of Utah.
According to local media, the panel of three judges ruled that the ban "unconstitutionally discriminates" against same-sex couples wishing to marry.
On Wednesday, the Denver-based 10th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a previous ruling of a lower federal court. However, the panel put its 2 to 1 decision on hold, pending an appeal.
The issue will now be decided by the Supreme Court.
In a statement, the appeals court said: "It is wholly illogical to believe that state recognition of love and commitment of same-sex couples will alter the most intimate and personal decisions of opposite-sex couples."
In response to the decision, the Utah attorney general's office said: "Although the Court's 2-1 split decision does not favour the State, we are pleased that the ruling has been issued and takes us one step closer to reaching certainty and finality for all Utahns on such an important issue with a decision from the highest court."
Also on Wednesday, a judge overruled Indiana's ban on same-sex marriages. Gay couple are now allowed to marry in the state.
Currently, same-sex marriage is legal in 19 US states and the District of Columbia.
