Midwives Prepared To Take Strike Action

An overwhelming number of midwives and maternity support workers in England have said they are prepared to take industrial action over pay.

The move follows a consultation by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), understood to be the first in its history, asking its members about industrial action.

Those working in the NHS in England were asked if they were prepared to strike and more than 94% of respondents said yes.

The RCM will now decide whether to formally ballot members on industrial action.

Commenting, Cathy Warwick, chief executive of the Royal College of Midwives, said: "The sense of anger and frustration amongst midwives is palpable. We knew midwives were angry about the derisory offer from the Government but this response from our members highlights just how unfairly they have been treated. Such an unprecedented response with such a large number willing to consider action should ring alarm bells with the Government."

She added: "I spend a great deal of my time with midwives and I know they will always think of the woman and her baby first. Any action we might take will not affect the safety of women and their babies."
