Fifth Of Couples Now Enjoy A 'Buddymoon'

A new study has revealed that an increasing number of newlyweds are no longer going on their honeymoon alone. Instead, they are taking their friends – or even their parents – on the trip too.

The research, commissioned by foreign exchange firm Travelex, found that as many as 20% of couples have shared their post-wedding trip with their friends – in a holiday which is now being labelled as a "buddymoon". While others have not taken their friends on their honeymoon, they have chosen to take their parents.

Interestingly, half of couples said they would consider a "buddymoon" if it meant they would save up to 25% off the price of their honeymoon, while 40% said they would consider it if they saved 50%. Just 5% said they would travel with others if they had a saving of 75%.

When it comes to the most popular destinations for buddymooners, Dubai topped the list and was followed by Thailand and France. South Africa and Turkey rounded out the top five.

Elvin Eldic, from Travelex, commented: "With young couples feeling the growing financial squeeze of tying the knot, it's unsurprising that many are bucking traditional honeymoon trends in order to rein in the cost of getting married.

"It makes perfect sense to continue the celebrations with loved ones, while sharing the costs. In recent months the pound has improved significantly against most popular currencies."

Mr & Mrs Smith, who specialise in honeymoon bookings, added: "We've seen increasing popularity for couples sharing honeymoons. Once they've paid for individual flights, buddymoon groups can take advantage of group discounts, sharing villas and collaborating on costs throughout their holiday – often meaning they can afford to do more inspiring activities, or upgrade their experience."
