Barrie, 78, who is best known for playing Alma Sedgewick in Coronation Street, has been in a relationship with crime writer Hilary Bonner for almost a decade.
The actress was previously married to the late theatre director Robin Hunter, but in 2002, she admitted she was bisexual.
Speaking to The Sun, the couple confirmed they were engaged and joked that if they were to wait any longer, they risked "cutting it a bit fine".
They added: "As our combined ages will be 144 at the time of this cosmic event, we felt we might be cutting it a bit fine if we left it much longer. In any case, our dog was feeling insecure."
It is understood Barrie and Bonner, 65, will hold their ceremony at the Theatre Royal in London.
