Men Are The Biggest Spenders – Survey

A new survey has claimed that it is men, not women, who are the largest secret spenders.

The poll, commissioned by Vouchercloud, also revealed that men are more likely to lie about their spending habits as well as hide their purchases from their other half.

The survey looked at how people in Britain hide their purchases and spending habits from their partner, plus the lengths they go to in order to keep their spending a secret from their spouse.

Respondents were first asked, 'Do you or have you ever hidden your spending from your partner, including lying about the amount you have spent?', and 41% of men said yes. In contrast, just 22% of women said the same. They were then asked what kind of spending they were most likely to hide, with the top five secret purchases to be social expenditure. Nights out topped the list with 64% of the vote, and this was followed by fashion and beauty (46%), leisure activity costs (22%), automotive and transport (13%) and holiday expenditure (8%).

When asked why they chose to keep their spending quiet, the most popular response was, "I want to avoid arguments" with 84% of respondents choosing this option. "I don't want to cause unnecessary worry" (42%) and "I feel guilty about the purchase" (39%) were other common reasons.

For those who admitted to being deceitful about their spending habits, female respondents were more likely to downplay the price of a purchase (73%) or pretend a new item was actually an old purchase (61%). Men on the other hand, were more likely to hide a purchase altogether (64%) or destroy the receipt (59%).

Even taking these steps didn't help some spenders, as 54% of men and 34% of women confessed they had been caught out by their partner.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Vouchercloud said: "Obviously there are going to be some things that we keep from our partners in terms of spending. The odd little treat, an extra item whilst out shopping or lunchtime indulgence, is something that we don't really have to tell anyone about. The important thing is to make sure that this doesn't get out of hand or that, when it does, we 'fess up sooner rather than later."
