Half Of Mothers 'Enjoy Childbirth'

Despite the pain that childbirth causes to many women, a new survey has found that almost half of mothers still enjoyed the experience.

According to the study, which has been carried out by Mumsnet, a total of 1,662 mums found that 47% of women enjoyed giving birth. However, 64% said it was the most physically painful experience of their lives. Just under half of those polled also admitted that just under half of mums would do it differently the next time – or not give birth at all. While the figures seem contradictory, a spokesperson for Mumsnet said it was simply "one of those contradictions of birth".

Elsewhere, 44% of women felt no-one had honestly prepared them for childbirth, while 81% argued that images and portrayals of women giving birth on television shows and films tend to be "unrealistic".

Justine Roberts, Founder of Mumsnet, is quoted as saying: "It can be tricky to find unvarnished truth about what giving birth is actually like. We're either presented with a soft-focus vision of loveliness with the mum-to-be barely breaking out in sweat, or we're scared half to death with tales of surgery, emergency and ruthless pain."
