Cost Of Kid's Birthday Parties Soar

A new survey has found that the cost of children's birthday parties are soaring – because of competition between parents.

The study, conducted by Cussons Mum and Me, revealed that the average cost of a child's birthday party is now £152, with four in five mums feeling they need to impress their friends with more than just food and party games. Even this isn't enough for some parents however, as one in 10 admit to spending more than £250 on a birthday bash for their child (under the age of 12). More than £40 alone is said to be spent on party bags for the other guests to take home, for example.

Spending varies slightly depending on the birthday, the poll found, as parents are likely to spend the most on their child's fifth birthday. A first and 10th birthday party were also among the most expensive.

When it comes to organising the big event, 30% of parents felt birthdays are "very competitive", with only one in seven saying they didn't feel like they were being judged by the other mums and dads. A competitive 14% however, said they would make a point of not inviting other "competitive" parents along. An honest one in 12 said they "dreaded" organising their child's party.

While seven in 10 start planning their child's birthday party at least a month in advance, one in 10 claimed they leave it to the last minute – planning everything in less than a week.
