Men Want To Start Families First – Study

A new study has found that when it comes to having a child, men are actually the ones who want to start a family first.

According to the findings, men consider 29 the ideal age to become a father for the first time – compared to women who want to wait until they are 32. Although for many women, they would also set aside their late 30s and even early 40s, to having more children.

The survey, commissioned by VoucherCloud, involved 1,732 Britons; all of whom were aged between 18 and 39, had no children, and had been in a co-habiting relationship for the last two years.

They were asked, 'Do you ever want to have children?', and 88% of men said yes. Just 79% of women said the same.

Of those who did want to start a family, they were then asked, 'How many children would you like to have?'. The average number of children for both groups was two.

'What is the ideal age to have a first child?' was the next question asked, with respondents having to give an answer for both men and women.

Men gave themselves an average age of 29 years old when it comes to fatherhood, which was close to the female respondents' average answer which was 30 years old for a man. However, when it came to the ideal age for a woman to have her first baby, the answer was not as close. Male respondents gave an average ideal age for a women of 25 years old; this compares to 31 when the female group answered.

Both groups were also asked about the oldest age at which they would like to have a child, and men admitted they would like no be no older than 35, while women said 41 years of age.

A spokesperson for VoucherCloud said: "Over the last two to three decades, there has been a significant shift in the views of men and women when it comes to parenthood.

"The role of the celebrity dad has become more and more attractive, with the likes of David Beckham, Brad Pitt and Jamie Oliver, so it's no surprise that men feel more comfortable publicly embracing fatherhood and all of its unique perks and challenges.

"There has also been a significant shift in the working lives of both men and women and rightly so with women in the workplace, which has more than likely contributed to these results. After all, the ladies do all the hard work, so building careers before taking this hiatus has become of greater value, especially seeing as having a child only gets more expensive."
