Fewer People In NI Choose To Marry

Newly-released statistics have revealed that fewer people in Northern Ireland are getting married.

Of those that do tie the knot, they are waiting longer to do so.

The figures, released by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), found there were 8,126 marriages in Northern Ireland last year. However, this is a 4.2% fall on the 2012 figure of 8,480. Of the marriages that took place in 2013, around 30% – or 2,499 – were civil ceremonies.

The average age of a bride is now said to be 31, while grooms are 34.

Some people do choose to marry younger, with 14% of women and 6.8% of men tying the knot before the age of 25. A decade ago, this figure was 24% for women and 12% for men.

Elsewhere, 100 same-sex civil partnerships were registered in the region in 2013.

Looking at the number of divorces recorded in NI in 2013, there was 2,403. This is four more than the previous year.
