Man Jailed Over Sham Wedding

A man has been jailed after admitting he organised sham weddings for money.

According to the Home Office, 35-year-old Krisztian Kokeny arranged fake marriage ceremonies for Hungarian and Pakistani couples at Darwen Registry Office, Lancashire. He also arranged his own sham marriage in February 2013.

In July 2013, officers from the Home Office stopped a ceremony between a 27-year-old man from Pakistan and a 25-year-old Hungarian woman. It is understood Kokeny was a "fixer" for the ceremony. He was also said to have been paid more than £9,000 by the 28-year-old woman he had married so that she could apply for a European Economic Area (EEA) status as his wife.

EEA status allows those who are citizens of member countries, such as Hungary, to move freely between them.

Kokeny pleaded guilty to conspiracy to and assisting unlawful immigration in the UK. At Bolton Crown Court earlier this week, the accused, who is originally from Hungary but resides in Greater Manchester, was jailed for two years and 10 months.
