Men And Women's Top Compliments Revealed

A new study has revealed the top compliments men and women like to receive, as well as proving that just one compliment received each day is enough to improve a person's mood.

The research, which has been commissioned by AXA, found that, of the 2,000 people polled, 61% said they needed a daily compliment to be happy. Of those who needed a compliment, 75% said just one is enough to be happy for the day and feel secure. However, some participants admitted they aren't as easily satisfied, with 14% needing two or three compliments a day, while 10% required more than four.

When it comes to paying a compliment, men and women prefer different things. For example, complimenting women on how they look has the greatest positive effect on their mood, while men prefer to receive praise regarding their personality and behaviour.

Not all compliments are well received, though. 59% of people said they would not appreciate being told 'you look thin', while 44% said they wouldn't respond well to someone saying they were 'glowing'.

Giving compliments is also more beneficial than receiving, the study found, with 45% of people claiming that giving a compliment makes their day, compared to just 35% who feel getting a compliment makes them happy. An honest 6% admitted they give out compliments, purely in the hopes that they will receive one in return; while for 26%, they never receive a compliment during the course of an average day.

Psychologist Donna Dawson said: "It only takes a minute's thoughtfulness to make someone else feel good, and to set them up for the day. This research reveals what has always been true about human nature: that we all need to feel loved and appreciated, and that harmony in all our relationships is more important to us than material things.

"A simple, truly-meant compliment can buoy us up; a back-handed compliment, which insults under the guise of pretending to flatter, reveals more about the giver's insecurity and jealousy than about us, and should be treated as such."

Chris Jones, AXA Head of Brand, added: "The little things we say to people really do mean a lot and take no effort at all. But choose your words carefully."
