According to The Mirror, the couple, named as Matt and Kelly Gamblin, married at York Register Office before travelling to Skipwith Hall in Yorkshire for their reception, where a marquee had been set up.
However, when the couple arrived at the venue, they discovered their wedding cake had been demolished. The cake, which had been made by Kelly's grandfather Richard, was thought to have been damaged in transit, but when the pair looked closer, they discovered the dance floor was decorated – with muddy footprints.
Matt, 35, is quoted by the publication as saying: "It was quite upsetting – we just couldn't understand what had happened. When Richard showed us, I just thought it hadn't travelled well.
"When he told me it had, we noticed the muddy paw prints on our dance floor and knew something had got it. Then we saw the dog hairs all over the remaining half and it was quite clear.
"It didn't ruin our big day but we were gutted, as was Richard."
It later emerged that caterers had tried to keep animals away from the marquee earlier in the day. It is not known where the dog came from, but there was a field at the back of the marquee and some think it came from there. The breed of the dog responsible is also a mystery, but a guest at the reception said they had seen a black Labrador lurking around.
While the couple had to go without their specially-made cake on the day, they tried their best to salvage the situation – with Matt's brother going to the local supermarket to buy a cake.
