The couple first separated in June 2013, but were said to have reunited earlier this year after Sam fell ill and Essex helped her to recover.
However, it is thought that the couple's recent holiday to Marbella in Spain, is where the romance ended.
According to The Sun, 24-year-old Essex called off the relationship after a number of rows with his partner.
A source is quoted as saying: "They are constantly bickering and falling out. It's not been pretty.
"But the last straw was in Marbella. The atmosphere between them wasn't healthy and Joey simply had enough. He just had to get away."
The former TOWIE star then caught a flight home, which he tweeted about, simply saying: "Most uncomfortable flight and coldest I have ever flew haha. Don't wear shorts and flip flops! Back home in bed :) x"
Just two days earlier, Faiers, 23, tweeted a message gushing of the couple's love for one another. The photo was of the two enjoying a romantic dinner together, with the caption: "Love u @JoeyEssex_ xxx (sic)".
Neither Essex or Faiers, who are prolific users of Twitter, have been on the social networking site since news of their separation emerged.
On Thursday, a representative for Essex confirmed the couple had separated, but did not reveal the reasons behind the couple's decision.
