More Women In Their 40s Becoming Mothers

The latest official figures have revealed that middle-age mothers are now outnumbering their teenage counterparts on maternity wards.

The numbers, released by the Office for National Statistics, found that in the past year, 29,158 babies were born to women aged 40 or over, compared to 29,136 children born to women under the age of 20.

Compared to statistics from 1982, the report found that there are now four and a half times as many children born to women over 40. Just 6,519 births were recorded in this category in 1982.

Elsewhere, 2,010 children were born to women over the age of 45; this is the first time the number has surpassed the 2,000 mark in recent times.

In England and Wales, the regions varied as to the age of mothers.

In London, for example, women aged over 45 gave birth to almost the same number of children as those aged under 18. Looking at the North West area however, the ONS said there were more than five times as many births by those under 18, compared with the over 45s.

A spokesperson for the ONS said: "The average age of mothers has been increasing since 1975, with increasing numbers of women delaying childbearing to later ages.

"This may be due to a number of factors such as increased participation in higher education, increased female participation in the labour force, the increasing importance of a career, the rising opportunity costs of childbearing, labour market uncertainty, housing factors and instability of partnerships."
